Robinson, John

(c. 1575–1625)
   Sect Founder and Polemicist.
Robinson was probably educated at the University of Cambridge. He was ordained into the Anglican ministry, but, as a strict Puritan, he joined a separatist group in Norfolk. In 1609 he was forced to flee with the group to Holland where he became the leader of the congregation in Leyden.
He encouraged emigration and in 1620 part of his flock left the Netherlands and, in the Mayflower, eventually landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Robinson himself stayed in the Netherlands, but he continued to exert an important influence on the Pilgrim Fathers through letters and sermons.
